| File / set | What it means for your next step |
|---|---|
| .apk | Android application package; determine whether it is standalone or part of a split set |
| .xapk | An archive format used by some distributors; not interchangeable with a standalone APK |
| .apks | An APK-set archive; can hold multiple device-specific packages |
| .aab | An Android publishing bundle, rather than the usual end-user installation file |
The visible app title is not the file format. Use the filename and the publisher’s installation instructions together. Renaming an archive to .apk changes the label, not the contents.
Why one APK may not be the whole app
Some Android distribution paths deliver a base package together with additional configuration or feature packages. A base file on its own may not be a complete installation for a particular phone. Randomly combining packages from different releases creates another source of error.
If the download source supplies a split set, use the installation method it documents or request a supported standalone release. This guide does not recommend an arbitrary archive installer.
Choose the next step
- Standalone APK supplied. Let the transfer finish, then use the install checkpoints.
- Archive or APK set supplied. Read the source’s instructions. Confirm that the format and release belong together before proceeding.
- Format is unclear. Keep the filename and source, and ask the publisher to identify the correct file. Do not treat an icon thumbnail as evidence of compatibility.
